Communication and Information Management

Clearing incidents safely and quickly within an effective incident management system is not based only on proven technologies and proper equipment, it also requires cooperation and communication among diverse organizations. Effective communications, information management, and data and information sharing are critical aspects of traffic incident management. Good communications and information management are essential no matter what size the event or planning effort. Disseminating clear information and instructions to both the responders and the general public as quickly as possible is key. Coordinated response plans create a shared understanding of public safety and transportation responders' roles as well as mutual expectations about on-scene actions and interactions. When multidisciplinary groups plan together, train together, and exercise together, they develop strong working relationships that lay the foundation for effective communication.
